  VP Nitpicks

I've been too mad to write lately.

Don't get me started on the "energy debate" that Obama and McCain had. It lasted about 2 weeks, as best as I recall, and fizzled out as the price of oil dropped below $109.99. Both parties agreed to spend money on other sources. Yea! All I wanted was someone with a flip chart showing 3.5TW of power in use in the USA, and a 2% growth rate, and a picture showing what percentage of that would come from what energy source by 2030.

All I wanted was just that one chart, that one graphic, that actually turned those two weeks of atonal political heat into air conditioned offices with great chairs for the rest of my life.

Also, for the last month I was asking: "Who will be the next Dick Cheney?".

Answer Numero Uno: Joe Biden. I'd go into the long tainted list here, but this is the guy that helped rewrite bankruptcy law long before the current crisis, ensuring that your pain would be more prolonged and severe.

Answer Numero Dos: Sarah Palin. She bears an uncanny resemblance to the character of Laura Roslin on Battlestar Galactica. I'd go into a list of where their qualifications, experience, and personal growth are similar.... but I'll wait for some other fanperson to write that up.

[elf? anyone? - help me out here?]

The Republicans think they have captured the SF channel vote.

The USA's issues in space are more severe than on that show. Technical issues (someone may have left a vacuum cleaner in the tank) and the latest hurricane, have disabled both of the space shuttles on the pad, and the problems in Georgia may deny the US manned access to space by 2010.

The show only goes to season 4 and I want to know: what happens to the people in the prison ships?

A season 1 Roslin might be sweet and tough, but a season 4 Roslin might say, Import some experts from across the Bering strait and bring back the gulag!! There's 600+ thousand potential jobs in Alaska if opened to major drilling. Forget freedom and space. Go North, young man! A life on a rig awaits you in the cold and -40 degree weather in the land of the midnight sun. Maybe we'll build a settlement for you with casinos, hard drugs, cheap beer, and easy women, just like Alberta...

I got a good belly laugh from this Alabama joke: I note that it is not politically correct to make fun of Alabamians or members of any other state that is heavily armed. But for the most part, Alabama is a "military" state, so it's assumed that the guard will take care of them... Oh, wait, their guard is in Iraq.

The "Red Menace" has been reversed. It's now Russia recognizing independence and the US barring it. It would be kind of interesting if Alabama's gun sales had spiked.

I found the button I plan to wear this season:

The last shuttle out of the US is scheduled for 2010.

I'll be there. So will a lot of people I know. 2010, The Cape - be there.

"Guns are sold out throughout Alabama this week. Said one native: "We aren't gonna get caught with our pants down by dem Russkies, like Georgia."

LOL! This joke made my morning-

Great Post!

the comparison betwixt the terrifying Palin and "Airlock Roslin" isn't lost on me. Good call.

Shaun: I took the liberty of fixing the spelling and grammar of the joke. It generally doesn't pay to offend armed folk...

cpm: well, I wanted to make it more explicit, and also bring in McCain as tigh...

Well, after last nights speech from Palin, wherein she flatly stated that the middle eastern wars were God's Will. Where drilling for oil/gas is God's will. That destruction of the earth in pursuits of deeper riches and more waste and consumption is God's will. Where War Is God's Will, , ,

This isn't even remotely funny anymore.

Someone tell a joke please.

Comment retraction? Hahahaha

Okay. Dave did the me the favor of calling me out on my comment above. I went back and read it and was really embarrassed. It's a stack of edits from a comment I was making. Not the comment I meant to make.

It's wholly incorrect.

I'm not going to restate it. But I am going to add some further thoughts despite the wholesale WRONGNESS of my comment.

I know that right now Palin seems like kinda a non-issue in the grand scheme of things.
But there is a measurable probability -albeit a small one- that this person could actually end up as POTUS.

Honestly, the thought that Obama could end up as POTUS really gives me pause. But the slimmer chance, but still a chance that Palin could be the big dog, really gives me pause.

Think about it carefully.

My gut reaction? She probably believes her own hype. She's probably a pretty cool person on a personal level. But she also is probably completely convinced of her rightness, surrounds herself with her own fan club and like many folks of that ilk, only takes criticism from her fans. Meaning, is nearly incapable of critical thinking intro/retrospection of any kind. Probably sees that as weakness.

Consider what that implies for POTUS/CINC esp in this time of war for vague reasons.

(I'm gonna actually preview this before I post it).

CPM : Sorry, but if you hadn't posted the "God's Will" ideas, I would have. The "God Fearing" / Bible Belt is really all the GOP has left (that was a pun) right now (that was another).

Shaun : I'm IN Alabama right now (massive mistake in personal life choices but I AM helping a friend so I take some solace in that). On that :
1. Sadly, SOME of the natives (I was going to say "these people") actually DID think Georgia got invaded. *Slams head into keyboard, sobs uncontrollably*.

2. "Well Armed" is a relative concept as a 12ga-double barrel and an ancient .308 Winchester that hasn't been cleaned or oiled since 1953 ... well. Firearms are "easy" to get here sure. But good "civilian versions" of military grade weapons can be had from Gander Mountain (chain) literally five blocks from my home. The economy here doesn't really support the cost of those weapons. Let me say that again : THE ECONOMY DOES NOT SUPPORT THE COST OF THOSE WEAPONS. So anything "useful" in an "Invasion" was quite readily available on the shelves.

Lots of 1911 .45s though...great in a bar-fight. .38's were gone at the store, 9mm too. .22, flat out, so was ammo (pissed me off because I owed my Mother in Indy a few boxes for her target pistol that I borrowed)? What the hell? Many rifles in low-caliber/magazine capacity (under eight rounds). And that's useful, how?

3. Oh yeah, where is the National Guard Unit here? Awfully quiet over at Redstone Armory (of which Marshall Space Center is right in the Middle). Make no mistake, it's covered. The last thing I want to see (because it's going to be the last thing I see) is an Apache-D with HellFire pods or a couple of Blackhawks angry with something on the ground near me. [Ref Item #2]. There's plenty.

4. Ratheon, BAE, Lockheed/Martin, Boeing are all here, I have no doubt that it'll never get to "small arms fire" if ever there was "an invasion". Stuff will bloom from the ground, and moments later other stuff will fall from the sky.

5. "These People" are indoctrinated in God/Country and completely uneducated (by the standards of people reading this blog I suspect), it's kinda sad really.

The city I occupy is 2-5% aerospace engineers, 20-25% military fodder. The rest I'm amazed can operate such sophisticated hardware as microwaves and automobiles...oh, wait. I guestimate 7% are capable of critical thought (SOME of the engineers, and everyone that's an NCO). Everyone else is so low on the evolutionary ladder that ...

By all means make fun of them. I do. Most often to their faces with some clever quip that would get my ass shot in Colorado (also well-armed, and educated <- there-in lies the rub). I just make a joke and smile...they laugh.

*Slams head into keyboard, sobs uncontrollably*. Damn, laptop keyboarddksssf areeefs hard to sfome sby.

These are the people that will buy into "Christian/Hunter/MILF" BS. Her ass will divert attention from the fact that the GOP has the combined brains of a rock.

Scratch that. I know rocks in the Pogonip that are personal friends of mine and WAY smarter.

Just thought I'd be an ass.

Oh, and YOU HAD DAMN-WELL BETTER be at the last launch in 2010 or I'll come get you!

You drug me (albeit neither kicking nor screaming) into the SS1 launch(es) [The second one hurt...turn around was the best sleep-deprivation I ever had though]. I'm returning the favor with the last shuttle launch.

Friends : Plan for up to a week delay (hotels/food/booze, whatever) for screw-ups, crud, and silly stuff. You guys cool with a KOA? I've got good sleeping bags and I'll front a week at one AND sleep on the floor. Just forget hotels near the base.

I'm going to call in a LONG time (and well-overdue) favor from The Magazine and pull a Press-Pass. But I hate drinking with reporters and the speculation therein.

Who Wants to do Photos and carry gear?

as oBomber turns more and more to the right, and his Change slogan is exposed for the Madison Avenue sham that it is, McCain gains ground.

No big surprise. He is being deserted by the liberal-left Dem constituency whom he courted during the primaries and who saw in him -- quite incorrectly and with a large measure of self-delusion and/or political naivete -- hope for a real change from the fascist Bush regime. And an alternative to the repugnant Hillary Clinton.

When you dig down beneath images, the differences between them ALL are too narrow to squeeze an onion paper between.

Their real constituency are the financial/social elites who finance both parties and campaigns. The only loyal "populist" base the Repubs have left are the deranged Christian fundies, thus the Palin nomination.

We are completely fuckt.
