  Fan sliders

One of the things that bothers me about the desktop metaphor, is, well, the metaphor. The two dimensional screen doesn't lend itself to representing three dimensional objects well.

Still, people keep trying. I've long been a fan of the never-used-anywhere pie menus, and catchy metaphors still catch my eye, even after a long burnout phase regarding gui design.

MPX and Cairo and Beryl are all fascinating experiments in their own way... but I have a couple physical control surfaces I have GOT to finish by summertime so I will just keep watching, and reading, and waiting....

Recently, Thorwill's Design for Free software blog has been coming up with some neat ideas. I really like the idea of fan-sliders, for example, and the layouts for a new matrix editor for ardour look inspiring.

So I find myself looking at ardour's very useful mixer/meter widget and thinking... but what if the meter and the slider overlaid each other? It would look pretty cool - and let me have way more meters on a screen....
