Apple to ditch IBM?
I flat out don't believe it.
The only compelling argument I can think of is that Jobs thinks he can ride the base Mac OS's generic capabilities onto the intel platform and outcompete Windows with it. That's audacious, I can believe that.
I can also see Apple doing PowerPC AND Intel, attempting to embrace the x86. They manage to sell OS X to their users for similar prices as XP - why not put it on the x86, particularly a 64 bit only variant?
Yet:
There is plenty of potential left in the powerpc, with the upcoming (but sure to be late) cell chip being ostensibly perfect for the multimedia applications Apple is so good at - or even the triple core processor that Microsoft is adopting for the Xbox.
The story has to be wrong in the particulars.
I don't believe Intel's itanium is going anywhere, either, Apple wouldn't adopt that, would they?
And apple has redefined itself by becoming the ipod company - de-emphasising the hardware business would let them focus their resources on other stylish things - cell phones, perhaps - home entertainment...
Anyway you slice it, though, the timing of the leak is sure to add some buzz for monday's show that wasn't otherwise existing. ¶ 10:11 PM
